Breaking: Tinubu Calls on Press to Hold Government Accountable, Applauds New NGE Officers

President Bola Tinubu has called on the media to fulfill its constitutional duty of holding the government accountable to the people. He also congratulated the newly elected President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Mr. Eze Anaba, and other elected officials. Tinubu's statement, titled "As journalism marches on in the service of Nigeria," emphasized the significance of the recent NGE Biennial Convention and highlighted the importance of peaceful and rancor-free elections.

Tinubu stressed the media's vital role in promoting good governance, stability, and sustainable development in Nigeria. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with the press to realize the country's development goals. Tinubu commended the NGE for setting an example of peaceful elections, indicating that competition for desired offices can occur without bitterness or acrimony.

The president called on all unions in the newspaper industry, including the NGE, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and Newspapers Proprietors' Association of Nigeria (NPAN), to embrace internal democracy and uphold professional integrity for the benefit of good governance. Tinubu highlighted the historical contributions of the media, particularly during the struggle against military dictatorship and the fight against the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by the media in fulfilling its role in strengthening Nigeria's democracy and promoting responsible governance. He pledged his administration's support, in collaboration with the media, to achieve these objectives in the best interest of the country.

In a related development, the National Judicial Council (NJC) has initiated the process of appointing eight new justices to the Supreme Court. This move comes as a response to the reduced number of justices at the apex court, which has led to an increased workload. The NJC aims to restore the Supreme Court's bench to its full complement of 21 justices. The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has requested interested and qualified lawyers to submit their expression of interest to the NBA secretariat in Abuja by June 21.
